![]() ![]() While the lines can give you a general idea of the storm’s movement, it is not until later in the process that the lines converge to form a more direct path for a storm. ![]() Again, those lines represent a computer’s idea of a path depending on the factors it is using to track the storm. ![]() In fact, if you notice the tracks early after the storm is born, you’ll see the outliers – lines that shoot off from the general cluster of potential forecast paths. Because they are created in different ways using different pieces of information, they are not necessarily accurate early on in the process. Professionals who track storms urge the amateur storm watcher to use the spaghetti models with a grain of salt. For instance, a computer model may use water temperature to create a possible path for a storm, and another may use wind patterns to come up with another possible path.Ī forecast is made by combining the different forecasts from a collection (or “ensemble”) of models. The lines represent different paths created using different types of information. Computers use data from satellites, historical tracks, temperature readings, wind patterns and other information to create a likely path for the storm. The free version definitely gave me everything I needed to track Hurricane Ian, but the app is so good that I am willing to support and get the paid version. Each of the colored lines represents one prediction for the path the storm could take. With all that said, the paid version is enticing considering a considerably expanded toolset to track hurricanes, and it is fairly cheap ($9.99 for a year, or $3.99 per month). In fact, I found that the news was unable to provide more information than this app, with the sole exception of Doppler radar, and there are other dedicated apps for that, like MyRadar. I basically didn’t need to check the news for info on Hurricane Ian, but I did anyways, and the data lined up every time. I was able to keep total up-to-date awareness of Hurricane Ian as it came through my neighborhood, and was able to make informed decisions thanks to the data provided by this app. Between the time-of-arrival predictions, cone trajectory predictions, spaghetti models, rainfall predictions, and multiple satellite image displays showing everything from enhanced photos to humidity levels, all gathered from the most recent NOAA data, the free version is wanting in nothing. I’ve only used the free version of the app, but the free version already offers a lot. This dedicated hurricane tracking app is worth every byte of storage on my phone. + New Satellite Ocean Heat Content products + New HMON & HWRF forecasts for tropical disturbances + New Tropical Cyclone Genesis Index graphics + Updated Storm Tracks graphics to reflect GFSv16 + New GEFS & NAEFS 16-day Wind Forecast products + New HMON / HWRF regional forecast graphics + New forecast models: HAFS, SHiELD, T-SHiELD + Improved the Radar and Weather Map Overlays + Added CIRA Satellite Imagery & Model Diagnostics + New 35-day Probability of Formation Graphics + Aircraft Reconnaissance & Satellite Surface Wind Analysis + Added MJO Phase Plots & Velocity Potential + Extended the Tropical Storm Outlook from 5 to 7 Days + New 21-day Global Tropics Hazards Outlook In total, there are now over 100+ hurricane / weather tracking products to help you stay informed during hurricane season.
